 Teaching plan for Section B in Topic 3, Unit 3 (J3)

 (2011-11-19)

  1.Teaching objectives

  1-1 Words & expressions:

  (1) Learn and practice the words and phrases used to talk about English learning e.g., be weak in, read aloud, ability, make mistakes, take a breath etc.

  (2) Learn the usage of wh- + to do sentences and practice them when talking about advises for difficulties in learning English, e.g., Could you give us some advice on how to learn English well? / I don’t know how to remember new words. How to improve it was my biggest problem. My difficulty in learning English is how to….

  1-2 Language skills

 (1) Practice listening 

  Listen to difficulties Ss often have in learning English (forget new words/ poor spelling / weak in pronunciation or grammar / dare not ask questions or talk with others in English) and the advice given by the teacher (to read the words aloud and use them / often check spelling after writing / listen to the tape a lot/ find the main grammar mistakes and ask why/ know questions are good way to learn/ take a deep breath, smile and say it.)

  (2) Practice reading 

  Read 1a for the gist (What the four boys are talking about: (1) their difficulties in English learning; (2) Kangkang’s advice about English learning for his friends; (3) a discussion about how to improve their English)

 

  Read 1a for the specific information: the three boy’s difficulties in English learning and Kangkang’s advice for them)

  (3) Learn and practice saying with wh- + to do sentences

 What’s your main difficulty in learning E.? – I

  don’t know…/ I wonder…/ My problem is how to remember new words; how to learn grammar well; how to improve my pronunciation; how to read fast/ what to do when see new words in reading…

  Why do you like so? – Because I am poor at …/

  weak in …

 1-3 Significance of learning

  Understanding Ss’ own problems in learning E. and the possible solutions.

 2.Teaching Procedure

 Stage 1 Lead-in: What difficulties do you have in E. learning?

  (1) The teacher greets the class and talks about the difficulties E. learners often have and asks Ss if they have the similar problems.

 (Bb: forget new words (T’s advice) read the words aloud and use them

  poor spelling often check spelling after writing

  weak in pronunciation listen to the tape again and again

  weak in grammar find the grammar mistakes and ask why

  dare not ask questions know question is a good way to learn

 dare not talk with others in English take a deep breath, smile and say it.)

  (2) Ss tick out one of their biggest problems and write it down.

  (3) Ss report their problems to the class and the whole class answer the T’s Q: What is his/ her difficulty in learning English? (- His/ Her difficulty is … )

 Stage 2 Listening: The advises about English Learning for Ss

 (1) Pre-listening

 T introduces some of the possible solutions (especially the

  ones with new words, e.g., read aloud, mistake, take a deep breath) and indicate clearly that Ss have to focus on the advice just for their personal problem. (It is for assigning Ss’ attention)

  (2) While- listening

 The first

  listening: listen to the teacher’s advice and see if they can find the advice for their own problems;

  The secord listening: listen again and try to

  write down the advice;

  The third listening: listen and check their

  writing about the problems.

  (3) Post-listening

 Read all the

  “problems” and“advice” aloud and match the “problems” with the“advice”one by one. Ss may get the final chance to revise their writing.

 Stage 3 Reading: Kangkang’s advises about E. Learning for his friends

 (1) Pre-reading

  Look at the picture on P. 71 and predict what the four boys are talking about:

 (1) their difficulties and problems in learning English;

 (2) Kangkang’s advice about English learning for his friends; (√)

  (3) a disscussion about how to improve their English.

  (2) While-reading 

  The first reading: read the dialogue (1a) and check their prediction;

 

  The second reading: read 1a again and fill in the table about the three boys’ difficulties and problems in learning English:

 Name Difficulties in learning English

  Wang Junfeng Can not remember new words

  Li Xiang Be weak in reading

  Li Ming Dare not answer questions in class

  

  The third reading: read 1a again and write down Kangkang’s suggestions for his friends (1b)

 Read after the tape.

  (T. explains “ability” if necessary)

  (3) Post-reading (Learn and practice saying with wh- + to do sentences)

 T. guides Ss to say their main difficulties in English using

  “I don’t know…/ I wonder…/ My problem is…”+how to remember new words; how to learn grammar well; how to improve my pronunciation; how to read fast/ what to do when see new words in reading…)

  T. asks “Why do you like so?” and

  guides Ss to say– Because I am poor at …/ weak in ….

 Ss do Activity 3 on

  P72 (completing the sentences with “Wh- + to do”)

  T. guides Ss to

  summarize the usage of “Wh- + to do”.

 3. Homework:

  Write

  about the personal problems in learning English and the solution Ss have learnt from today’s lesson;

 Get ready to report Ss’ problems in learning

  English.
